Real Madrid vs Lyon Odds and Predictions from Champions League

Champions League BettingEuropean Champions League preview Real Madrid v Lyon

Real Madrid heads into their second leg of the Champions League round-of-16 tie against Lyon all even at a goal each after drawing in France. They’ll kick off the second leg of the ties on March 16th at the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.

This could be the day Madrid gets the monkey off their back as they’ve been a disappointment in the Champions League over the past six years by not advancing past the round of 16 in that time. They now have one of the world’s top managers in Jose Mourinho though and he’s got an amazing record of not losing a game at home for years now.

We place our bets on the match at online bookie WilliamHill.com as they offer competitive odds and a lot of special bet options.

Lyon has given the Spanish side a lot of trouble over the years however, and could throw a spanner in the works again. A 1-1 score line isn’t a guarantee for anybody and this first goal in this match will be a huge one. The huge advantage of course, is that Madrid will be playing at home. And even if they put in a bad performance they usually come out with a draw.

But Real Madrid has never beaten the French squad and that evens up the playing field. Lyon should be going into this game as a pretty confident group while Madrid might be nervous due to their history against them.

The first leg was an interesting affair with Lyon dominating in the first half only to see Madrid take a 1-0 lead when Frenchman Karim Benzema scored right after coming into the game as a substitute. Lyon fought back and leveled the score on a goal by Bafetimbi Gomis.

Madrid could even play for a boring 0-0 draw here and see his team advance on the away goals rule. That could backfire though and a late goal by Lyon would knock the Spaniards out of the competition again. A 1-1 draw would see extra time and a draw at any other score would see Lyon go through.
Mourinho should be playing this game to win it instead of taking any risks with a scoreless draw.

Real Madrid has won their last three games by a combined score of 12 to 1, including a 7-0 league win over Malaga. Lyon has won two and drawn one in their last three and has outscored the opposition 8 to 1, including a 5-0 win over AC Arles.

Madrid will likely be missing the services of Kaka, Fernando Gago, Ezequiel Garay, and Gonzalo Higuain. Lyon will probably have to play without Aly Cissokho, Yoann Gourcuff, Ederson, and Cris.

Real Madrid has a lot of scoring power with Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Benzema scoring six goals in the last three league games. Lyon has Hugo Lloris in goal to try and stop them and he could be a key player.

Real Madrid vs Lyon Predictions

Real Madrid is basically invincible playing at home, but I can see this game ending in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and going to extra time, where Real will win it by a 2-1 margin on the night.

Bookmaker William Hill has the odds of a Real Madrid win posted at 1/3 with a draw at 4/1 and the odds of a Lyon win at 8/1. The odds of a Madrid 2-1 win are 15/2.
