Phillies win, despite just three hits
The Philadelphia Phillies needed just three hits to beat the San Diego Padres for the second straight night. Shane Victorino picked up two of the three hits for Philadelphia, including the game ahead triple off San Diego pitcher John Garland.
Victorino’s fifth inning single gave the Phillies the lead, but San Diego rallied back with a single of their own; from pitcher John Garland. Victorino’s triple in the seventh inning scored Jayson Werth from first base. The triple was followed by a ground out, which brought him home from third.
Joe Blanton picked up the win for the Phillies. He is now 6-6 on the season. He pitched six strong innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run. The bullpen consisting of Jose Contreras, Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits.
Garland finished the game after 6.1 innings. He falls to 13-9 on the season, and his earned run average is now 3.29.
The win for Philadelphia pushed them to 72-57 overall, good enough for second place in the National League East. Philadelphia is now 30-31 when playing on the road. The loss for San Diego dropped them to 76-52 overall, but still hold a comfortable lead on the Giants at the top of the National League West. San Diego is 38-25 when playing at Petco Park.
