NFL Betting Online
The reasons NFL betting is so much fun are many. For starters, there is an entire week between games, which helps build the anticipation, but also allows players time to research in order to make informed betting decisions. If you’re new to sports betting, or are considering adding NFL to your line up of regular bets, we strongly recommend the book Sharp Sports Betting by Stanford Wong.
Bet NFL at -105 Pricing at 5Dimes
In this book, you’ll learn about key NFL numbers. How much is -2.5 versus -3 worth on an NFL spread? This is information critical to know when it comes to analyzing NFL betting options.
There are just a couple things we’ve learned from this book were going to share here with you. If you’re serious about football betting, be sure to get a copy of this book, as we will barely cover the tip of the iceburg on this site.
Tip #1 Key Numbers in NFL
In NFL betting the most common score differentials totals are 3, 7, 4, 10, 6, 11 and 14. When you’re line shopping, it’s important to be extra careful around these numbers. The difference between -2.5 and -3 is often over 10%, meaning that if you shopped sportsbooks and got -2.5 instead of settling for -3, you’d win your bet about 10% more often. Wow, talk about savings on losses that could really add up.
We’re not going to go into detail on the value of each number, however we’ll share a tip here.
Buying NFL points on the 7
Most sportsbooks charge between 15 cents and 20 cents to buy 1/2 points surrounding the 7. For example if a team is -7.5 and you want to bet it at -6.5 it will cost you 30 to 40 cents on the pricing to do this. So instead of have -110 where you’ll risk $110 for each $100 you want to win, you’ll be risking -130 or -140 where you’ll need to risk $130 or $140 for an opportunity to win the same $100.
If you can buy half points on, off, or through the 7 at ten cents each, this is a profitable move, assuming you’ve already capped the wager to be +EV at existing number. Finding sportsbooks that allows this are rare, however a handful still do exist. Remember, anytime you’re betting +6.5 or +7 check to see if you can buy to +7.5 at 10 cents per half point and if you can, do so. Likewise, anytime you’re betting -7 or -7.5 see if the same option exists to buy half points at ten cents per half point, and if so, you’ll want to buy the line down to -6.5.
Generally speaking, these are the only profitable uses of buying points in NFL, as the prices charged per point are higher than their value around all other spreads.
Tip #2 Basic Strategy Teasers
Teaser bets are a form of a parlay where you need to select two or more teams, and both must win. A standard two team parlay is sold at -110, and the reason that the odds are the same as a straight wager is that you’ll be given 6 points on each team. For example, if one team is -10 and the other team is +5 you’ll now have lines of -4 and +11. The example just given is a bad bet! For the most part, teasers have a high house edge, and this is why bookies offer them. If there wasn’t an exception to this rule, we wouldn’t be talking so much about teasers. So let us now introduce you to basic strategy teasers.
A basic strategy teaser is one where the addition of the six points moves the line past the two most important numbers in an NFL spread. The 3 and the 7; however, you must avoid road favorites when using this system, as historically these have not fared well.
A +EV teaser is to take:
1) All underdogs between +1.5 to +2.5 (teased to +7.5 to +8.5)
2) All home favorites between -7.5 and -8.5 (teased to -1.5 to -2.5)
And put them into teaser bets.
A good idea is to round robin these bets into many different options. If there are three games that fit into basic strategy for a given week, well you’ll then be making 7 wagers. All 6 of the possible combinations of two team teasers and the single three team teaser.
With round robin teasers (these must be entered manually by the way – one at a time), it is important to follow good bankroll management. Especially on weeks where 5 or 6 basic strategy teaser legs exist.
